I’m a huge fan of fancy pools and beaches, but a writer’s salary isn’t typically one that can handle the hotel bill to stay at the hotel attached to those fancy pools and beaches too often. Daypass is an app lets poor schlubs like me get access to the wellness and fitness amenities at properties around the world and pay a day rate rather than for an entire night’s stay. That means you can lounge by the pool at a $600/night hotel for $80 for the entire day, or get access to that exclusive beach area at a five-star resort while staying at the Motel 6 down the street.
The iPhone and Android app offers access to spots places like Miami, Hong-Kong, Paris, and Dubai and includes passes to not only pools and beaches, but also gyms and health clubs as well as saunas and steam rooms. The idea here is that you’re getting limited access to some of the finest things that particular property has to offer but at a deep discount.
The service certainly works for vacations, but it can also come in handy for a staycation, where you just want too spend the day a property in your hometown.
For instance, in Miami, you can get access to the pool at the five-star St. Regis for $90 a day, or cabana for four people for $390. In contrast, the cheapest room rate at the hotel for the day is $689, plus a resort fee of $35. While $90 certainly isn’t a cheap day at the pool, that’s a pretty significant price difference. Pool access can be booked directly within the app so you’re ready to go as soon as you arrive at the property.
One huge downside is the app isn’t available everywhere. When I looked for a pool in my hometown of San Francisco the app offered a few suggestions for places I could call but didn’t have any I could book right in app. The same goes for New York.
That said, depending on where you’re traveling it could be an easy way to have a “luxury” experience without having to pay a full luxury price tag
